Tour Overview

Offering an equally spectacular experience without the high-altitude throngs, the Gokyo Lakes Trek is a beautiful substitute for the traditional Everest Base Camp walk. Beginning with a picturesque flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the trek ascends slowly through Sherpa towns such Phakding and Namche Bazaar following the lovely Dudh Koshi Valley. From Namche, the path departs from the main EBC route and travels toward the tranquil Gokyo Valley, which contains a sequence of six turquoise glacial lakes; the fifth lake provides near views of the Ngozumpa Glacier—the largest glacier in the Himalayas. The climb to Gokyo Ri (5,364 m), which provides some of the finest panoramic views in the Khumbu area—including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu—is the high point of the trek.

Gokyo Lakes Trek for Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter 2025 departures is now open for reservations.

Gokyo Lake FAQs

The Gokyo Lakes Trek is rated as moderately difficult, which makes it a great choice for adventurous beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. You’ll be walking 5–7 hours most days, with a few longer stretches. The altitude does reach up to 5,364 meters at Gokyo Ri, so being in good physical shape is important. Prior trekking experience is helpful but not mandatory—what matters most is a positive mindset, steady pacing, and some pre-trip conditioning (especially cardio and leg strength).

The highest point is Gokyo Ri at 5,364 meters, offering one of the most stunning Himalayan panoramas—including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. To help you acclimatize safely, the itinerary is thoughtfully paced with rest days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo. Our guides are experienced in monitoring altitude symptoms, and we follow the 'climb high, sleep low' rule to minimize risk. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, and listening to your body are key.

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and great visibility of the mountains. In spring, the trails bloom with rhododendrons, while autumn provides crisp air and golden landscapes. Winter treks are possible but come with cold temperatures and possible snow blockages. Monsoon season (June–August) is less ideal due to rain and leeches.

You'll stay in cozy, locally run teahouses along the trail. These provide basic but comfortable lodging—think twin beds, warm blankets, and shared bathrooms. Most have a central dining area heated by a yak-dung stove (yes, it works wonderfully!). Rooms are clean but simple, so bring a good sleeping bag for extra warmth. In Kathmandu, you'll stay in a well-rated hotel with modern amenities.

Our Gokyo Lakes Trek package includes nearly everything you need: all trekking permits, domestic flights (Kathmandu–Lukla–Kathmandu), accommodation on the trek and in Kathmandu, three hearty meals per day while trekking, a licensed English-speaking guide, and porter support. Not included are your Nepal visa, travel insurance, personal trekking gear, tips for the crew, and snacks or beverages beyond meals. We’ll send you a full pre-departure checklist so you’re well-prepared.

Layering is key! Bring moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or down jacket, waterproof outerwear, gloves, hat, and a sturdy pair of trekking boots. A daypack, water bottles or hydration system, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a headlamp are also must-haves. We'll provide a detailed packing list, and if you're missing anything, Kathmandu has great gear shops where you can buy or rent equipment at good prices.

Temperatures vary by season, but expect chilly mornings and nights, especially above 4,000 meters. During autumn and spring, daytime temperatures can range from 10–15°C (50–59°F), while nighttime can dip to -5°C (23°F) or lower near Gokyo. Winter trekkers should brace for even colder conditions. Teahouses aren’t heated in the bedrooms, so a warm sleeping bag is essential for comfort.

Absolutely! This trek winds through charming Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar and Dole, where you’ll get a feel for mountain life. You'll pass Buddhist stupas, prayer flags, and centuries-old monasteries, and your guide can help explain local customs and beliefs. Many trekkers say that connecting with the warm, resilient Sherpa people is one of the most meaningful parts of their Himalayan journey.

Unlike the more crowded Everest Base Camp trail, the Gokyo Lakes route offers a quieter, more serene experience with equally jaw-dropping views. The emerald glacial lakes are absolutely magical, and Gokyo Ri arguably rivals Kala Patthar for panoramic views. If you’re seeking dramatic landscapes with a side of solitude, fewer crowds, and plenty of photo-worthy moments—this trek is your hidden gem in the Khumbu.
