Tour Summary

The Tsum Valley Trek is a little-known treasure in the Nepalese Himalayas. It combines beautiful alpine scenery with remote wilderness and cultural heritage. This sacred Himalayan pilgrimage route is in the Manaslu region of the northern Gorkha district and is part of the Inner Himalayas. The trek starts with beautiful drives through the countryside of Nepal. Then you go through traditional Tibetan-influenced villages, lush forests, and steep valleys. Trekkers can see the beautiful Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, Buddha Himal, and Himal Chuli along the way.

There is a good reason why the Tsum Valley is called the "hidden valley." It has been cut off from the rest of the world for hundreds of years and still has a strong Tibetan Buddhist culture. Gompas (monasteries), chortens, mani walls, and sacred caves give this valley its spiritual character. One of the best things to do is visit Mu Gompa, Gompa Lungdang, and Milarepa Cave, as well as see some of the longest mani walls in Nepal. This hike is great for people who want to see trails that aren't very popular but are full of history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

You can book trips for all of the 2025 Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter departures.

  • Daily Walking Hours: You walk for about 5 to 7 hours a day through remote trails, old villages, and alpine landscapes.
  • The highest point is 5,093 meters above sea level.

After having breakfast, till not leaving the same river, you will be walking on the bank of Budi Gandaki River on the same way for Manaslu round trekking. After enjoying lunch on the way, you will hike through a wild lesser known route of Tsum valley. The trail mostly goes through the forest and some Gurung villages. You have to descend down for half an hour up to Lungwa Khola and then climb on a zigzag trail for further two hours north through Pines and Rhododendrons until you reach Gumlung. After crossing the Siyar Khola, you finally arrive at Chumling. It is the lower Tsum valley. Chumling is located on the south face of the Shingri Himal from where you can see an eye catching view of Shringi Himal. You can also visit the old Chumling Gompa, and the stone streets of the village.

  • Max Altitude: 2390 m
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Teahouse

Descend through beautiful forest, crossing two new bridges, circle under a huge bluff on the river then climb steeply on deteriorating exposed stairs. After about 30mins you will start to traverse north through Pines and Rhododendrons, still climbing and with very steep slopes. The hidden valley of Tsum stretches enticingly ahead. Eventually descend to a deserted bhatti Ghumlong (2130m) on the river. The path straight ahead climbs steeply to Ripchet (2470m; Ripche) in about 1hr; the path to Chumling (2360m) crosses the Siyar Khola on a wooden bridge and up. It is not for those afraid of heights – several locals have fallen to their death from this track while drunk. After about 30mins, below Chumling, take the level track to right (east) for 15mins to arrive at a lodge with 6-8 beds. Make sure you climb up to Chumling and check out the old gompa, the traditional houses, orchards, clinic and beautiful stone streets. This is Buddhist agriculture, with conical pine needle haystacks among the prayer flags. From here on trails are lined with artistic chortens and mani walls made of thousands of stone slabs carved with deities and prayers. Traverse north out of Philim on the obvious track signposted to the Larkya La, through some pretty forest with views up the narrowing valley. After 1hr climbing enter the increasingly misnamed Ekle Bhatti (1600m; ‘lone teashop’) with at least six bhatti, then traverse high above a spectacular gorge, entering a largely uninhabited area of pine trees. Eventually drop to a trail junction going left to Ghap and right to the Tsum Valley, just above Gum Pul ‘bridge’. Climb on a well-graded but exposed track through Pines and Rhododendrons, looking down on the other trail across the river. If the slopes here have recently had their annual burn there is a real risk of stonefall from the cliffs above, especially if there are goats grazing. Climb on zigzag steps, increasingly exposed, and gain your first glimpses of the narrow lower Tsum Valley, very steep across the Siyar Khola (Shiar Khola) which drains from the very top of the valley. Stay overnight at Philim.
