Do you want to retrace the footsteps of the first successful Everest expedition, or are you just looking for an alternative to the Lukla flight? Then, the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek is your answer. It is the same route followed by the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary (the first humans to reach the summit of Mt. Everest) during their 1953 Everest expedition.

You will start the trek by driving from Kathmandu to Jiri, which takes around eight hours. From here, you will ascend through beautiful Sherpa villages, enjoying gradual altitude gain. By the time you reach Namche Bazaar and join the mainstream EBC trail, you will be well-acclimatized and used to rugged terrain.

It will significantly help you further on the way as you ramble the higher trails. The Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri 19 days is a perfect itinerary for beginner trekkers. Even though it is a longer trek than the standard 14 days EBC trek, the risk of altitude sickness is low, and you will enjoy a peaceful walk.

We highly recommend the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri to trekkers who are on a long vacation. It will be an incredible journey away from the bustle of megacities. You will enjoy nature and wilderness, take a break from the stimulating digital world and polluted air, and embrace the warmth and kindness of the locals.

Bookings are open for the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri 2025 departures. You can do a group or private trek with us. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We have shared more about the trek along with the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri map and itinerary below.

What is it like doing the Everest Base Camp trek by road?

The Everest Base Camp trek by road offers a much more comfortable and calming start to the trip. You will traverse the pristine foothills of the Khumbu region (Everest region) and enjoy the heartwarming hospitality of the locals. Starting the trek from Jiri, the trail goes through many small villages, rhododendron forests, and terraced fields. Before reaching Namche Bazaar, you will spend nights in Bhandara, Sete, Junbesi, Nunthala, Bupsa, and Chheplung. These six days of trekking before Namche will present you with tranquil trails. You will literally have the trail and the views for yourself. In the initial few days of the journey, you will relish glimpses of snow-capped mountains peaking through dense forested hills and valleys. It will build the excitement of a full panorama as you ascend higher. In Namche Bazaar, you will take an acclimatization break.

Hike to the Hotel Everest View, enjoying breathtaking panoramas of Mt. Thamserku and Kongde Ri. You will see a marvelous distant view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam from the hotel. Namche Bazaar onwards, you will trek through Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep.

This is the famous route to EBC. Explore the biggest monastery in Tengboche village, and after Dingboche, you will enter the alpine zone. The lush valleys change to glacier valleys. Barren peaks and snow-covered mountains surround you. It will be intimidating but also grounding.

Gorak Shep is the middle ground between Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. You will hike to both of these places from here. Everest Base Camp is the lap of the tallest mountain in the world. Kala Patthar is a viewpoint famous for its heavenly sunrise and view of Everest and adjacent peaks such as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Chamlang.

After the final hike, you will descend from Gorak Shep to Lobuche and follow a shorter route to Namche Bazaar via Pheriche. One more day of descent will take you to Lukla, from where you will fly back to Kathmandu.

We have included the Lukla flight at the end of the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri. However, you can customize the itinerary and trek to Jiri or Phaplu to end the trek and drive back to Kathmandu. It will add another 4 to 5 days of walking.

The Sherpa communities and their hospitality along the trail

Sherpas are one of the most famous communities worldwide. They are native to the Everest region and known for their strong build, willpower, and kindness. On the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri, you will explore many Sherpa villages and get to have memorable encounters with them.

Get to know them and their culture closely. In addition to that, you will also meet with other mountain communities who are equally charming and welcoming. You will be warmly welcomed everywhere you go in the villages. The food, stories, and laughter will enhance the trek immensely.

Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri preparation and packing

To improve your stamina and strength, especially for beginner trekkers, begin exercising at least 4 to 6 weeks before the trek starts. You will walk an average of 6 hours a day during the trek, so it is important that you are in good shape. Likewise, go on a few day hikes near you or long walks.

It will help you build walking habits, which will make the trek less exhausting physically and mentally. Also, if you plan to buy new trekking shoes, buy them early and get used to them. New shoes may give you blisters, and we do not want them while trekking.

Now, to pack for the trek, follow the list below:

  • Clothing: Trekking boots, lounge slippers, beanie, scarf, gloves, socks, dry towel, underwear, t-shirts, trekking t-shirts and pants, thermal pants, fleece jacket/down jacket, windcheater, raincoat, etc
  • Trek gear: Trekking poles, torch, sunglasses, duffel bag (provided by us), sleeping bag, backpack, torch, reusable water bottle, water purification tablets, etc
  • Health and hygiene: Hand sanitizer, general medicines, bandages, blister cream, high SPF sunscreen, SPF lip balm, moisturizer, wet tissues, toilet paper, personal medication (if any), deodorant, toothpaste/brush, biodegradable soap, small mirror, comb, etc
  • Miscellaneous: Power bank, camera, spare batteries, passport, travel visa, passport-size photos, snacks and bars, Nepali cash, adapter, journal/pen, map, trekking permits, passport, travel visa, book, etc

Combine Ama Dablam Base Camp or Gokyo Lakes in your itinerary

The Ama Dablam Base Camp hiking route is offbeat and steep. The route separates from Pangboche village on the way from Tengboche to Dingboche. If you want to add an adventurous side hike to your EBC trek, Ama Dablam Base Camp is a great option.

Likewise, Gokyo Lakes are among the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Himalayas. The trail diverts from Namche Bazaar and follows a less crowded, offbeat route to Gokyo Valley. On the way, you will see the biggest glacier in Nepal, Ngozumpa Glacier, and outstanding views of Cho Oyu, Island Peak, Makalu, Cholatse, etc.

Additional Info

Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri difficulty & altitude sickness

The Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri is moderately challenging. It is a long trek, so trekkers have to spend a good time in the mountains, adjusting to simple food and services. Likewise, the six hours of daily walking demand physical and mental willpower. On a good note, there are fewer risks of altitude sickness during the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri because of the slow gain in elevation. To do this trek, you need to commit.

Travel Insurance

Trekking with travel insurance covering helicopter evacuation will give you a huge safety to rely on. In case of an emergency, you do not have to worry about evacuation expenses and can rely on your travel insurance. In addition to that, you can also combine medical bills, loss/theft of personal property, etc, coverage in your travel insurance.

Food

During the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri, you will have a wide variety of food. From the famous dal bhat, thukpa, and momo to pizza, burger, and pasta, the options are excellent on this trek route. Meat items are limited but good. We recommend you ask about the freshness of the meat before eating it.

Note that most meats are frozen in the mountains. Likewise, you will get fresh fruits, eggs, bakery items, oats, pancakes, porridge, pies, muesli, etc. Similarly, drinking water is also widely available in all villages. Carry a reusable water bottle that can keep your water warm for at least 8 hours a day.

Accommodation

During the trek, you will spend nights in lodges. Accommodation will be simple. Rooms are shared between two trekkers; a single room costs a bit extra money. Washrooms are shared. Private washrooms with hot water and Western-style toilets are available in luxury lodges.

If your budget allows, you can upgrade to luxury lodges. Basic lodges have Western-style toilets, which are available in most villages, but the washrooms are not private. Do not rely on lodges for toiletries. We even recommend packing paper soaps and toilet paper for the journey.

The best time to do the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trekking

The best time to do the Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri is the Spring (March to May) and the Autumn (September to November) seasons. It is because of clear mountain views, mild climate, and stable weather.

Winter (December to February) is also a great time to trek to EBC, especially if you want to enjoy a tranquil mainstream trail. The climate is cold, and the region receives snowfall in winter.

Summer/monsoon (June to August) is not one of the recommended times for the EBC trek via Jiri because rainfall ruins the trail and increases the risk of landslides. The mountain views are also obstructed if the weather is gloomy.

Guide and porter

Our Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek package includes a guide and porter. All of our guides are very experienced and friendly. They are passionate about their work and make trekking seamless and safe for foreigners.

You can trek freely with our guide and porter. They will motivate you, push you when you feel like not walking, and keep you entertained. In addition, you will get to know a lot about the locals, mountains, vegetation, and hidden trails along the way.

Everest Base Camp via Jiri FAQs

Jiri to Everest Base Camp adds another 75 to 80 kilometers of walking to your itinerary. You will reach Everest Base Camp in 12 days of walking from Jiri. It also includes one acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar.

Phaplu is another starting point for the EBC trek without a Lukla flight. It is a small town with an airport, so you can drive or fly to Phaplu from Kathmandu. The village is located at 2,413 meters above sea level.

We recommend that trekkers carry sleeping bags during the Everest Base Camp trek. The temperature drops in the night and mornings, especially as the elevation increases, and the climate will get cold. Lodges provide blankets, but they may not be enough to keep you warm throughout the night.

The Everest Base Camp trek via Jiri is fantastic for families. This itinerary provides ample time to acclimatize before you touch the higher trails. Your kids will adjust to the mountain lifestyle and environment, and there is less risk of altitude sickness.

Jiri to EBC adds a few more days of walking than Lukla to EBC. So, you will walk more on Jiri to EBC. On the good side, it will help you get used to the trail and elevation, making it easier to adjust to higher altitudes above Namche Bazaar. Overall, the route is not difficult.

There is not much difference in package cost, whether you start the Everest Base Camp trek with a Lukla flight or drive to Jiri. At most, you may see a USD 100 to USD 200 difference in cost.

Spring and autumn are the best times to do the EBC trek via seasons. Our favorite is the spring season because the trail is blooming with numerous flowers and rhododendrons. The greenery is at its peak, and the scenery is heavy.

You can take a local bus or jeep ride from Kathmandu to Jiri, or you can rent a private vehicle.

Simple lodge accommodation is available up to Chheplung village. From here, you will join the mainstream EBC trail, so you will have access to both budget-friendly and luxury lodges.

Yes, trekking to EBC via Jiri or Phaplu is suitable for beginner trekkers. This itinerary also lowers the risk of altitude sickness and allows you to spend more time in the mountains.

There is a huge difference in acclimatization between trekking from Jiri and Lukla to Everest Base Camp. If you start the trek from Jiri, you will have seven days of acclimatization before reaching Namche Bazaar.

However, this is not the case when you trek from Lukla. You can reach Namche Bazaar in just two days of walking from Lukla. So, the chance of acclimatization is best during the Jiri to EBC trek.

During the monsoon period, the road may get blocked if landslides occur in any of the hills along the highway. However, this does not happen frequently. Overall, the road conditions are quite reliable year-round. We still highly recommend asking local transportation operators.

Yes, vegetarian food is widely available during the trek. The menu includes many types of vegetarian curries, stir-fries, noodles, thukpa, and momo.

Yes, a normal person can go to Kailash Mansarovar. If you have the necessary documents and willpower to complete the Kora, you can join us. You can also visit Kailash Mansarovar and not do the Kora. It is up to you.
