Trek Overview

The Annapurna Circuit has long been one of the most loved adventure treks in Nepal. This trek is one of the best ways to enjoy impressive mountain panoramas and beautiful traditional Nepali villages. The journey presents deep mountain valleys, incredible landscapes, vast meadows, and a glimpse of exclusive trans-Himalayan scenery as you descend to Muktinath from Thorong La Pass. Before, we continue talking more about this incredible trek. Let us clear the question regarding the construction of the road and whether it has made the Annapurna Circuit any less adventurous. For your information, the Annapurna Circuit trek used to take around three weeks to complete, but now you can complete it in just two weeks or even less. This is because of road construction on both sides of the trail. However, it has not made the trek itself any less adventurous. More so, the Annapurna Circuit has become even more accessible. The mountain views are still extremely beautiful, and the overall trek experience is phenomenal.

You can even combine side hikes to destinations like Tilicho Lake for more adventure and challenge. The Annapurna Circuit trek usually starts from Dharapani/Chame, but you can also drive to Manang and start the trek from here.

You can customize the itinerary according to your interests. We recommend trekking to Chame because the trail is very scenic. You will ascend the Marsyangdi River valley, enjoying big mountain views lurking behind trees.

Welcoming locals and striking landscapes while traversing from Marsyangdi Valley to Kali Gandaki Valley

The Annapurna Circuit trek route goes through many picturesque villages, which are home to Nepali communities like Magars, Gurungs, and Thakalis. The villages are adorable, with tiny little homes, thatched roofs, colorful fluttering prayer flags, and rhododendron trees.Lush hills, peaks, and snow-covered mountains are visible from most villages, making the scenery mesmerizing. The locals are used to foreigners and the English language, so you will have no issue with basic communication.

You will feel welcomed with their heart-warming hospitality. They will make warm meals for you and ensure you are cared for. Similarly, the Annapurna Circuit trail runs from Marsyangdi Valley to Kali Gandaki Valley. While trekking through these valleys, you will see a diverse landscape. Once you reach Thorong La Pass, lush, verdant hills and waterfalls change to barren peaks and vast meadows.

As you descend from here to Muktinath and pass by Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, you will see arid landscapes. Mountains like Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Fishtail, Tilicho Peak, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and many others are seen on this trek.

What is it like crossing the Thorong La Pass?

Thorong La Pass is the highest point on the Annapurna Circuit trek and also the most challenging section. The pass connects the Annapurna region with the Mustang region. From Thorong Phedi, you will start climbing around 4 or 5 AM to avoid strong winds. The trail is steep, rocky, and snow-covered in colder months. Switchbacks and narrow ridges are common. The descent from Thorong La Pass is also challenging because of the steep slopes.

The feeling of immense achievement after crossing the pass and the view from the top make all the hardships worth it!

Annapurna Circuit trek distance and terrain

Our Annapurna Circuit trek distance is approximately 85 to 90 kilometers. It is shorter than usual because we stop walking at Muktinath and drive from here to Pokhara. However, as per your itinerary, the distance can increase to 120 kilometers or more. The Annapurna Circuit terrain is offbeat. You will walk through rugged and rock tracks. The trail ascends and descends via rhododendron hills and lush ridges. Many sections are narrow and steep and require extra attention. You will also cross several suspension and wooden bridges.

How do you prepare, and what do you pack for the Annapurna Circuit?

The Annapurna Circuit trek 14 days is challenging. Therefore, it is recommended for physically and mentally fit trekkers. The trek demands 6 hours of daily trekking, limited services, no network, and high-altitude exposure.

Your strength and stamina should be on point for the best experience. Likewise, understand the region and its limitations and have a positive mindset. The journey is all about getting out of your comfort zone, getting close to nature, pushing your limits, and surviving in the remote Himalayas.

Annapurna Circuit trek difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit trek stands as one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. Your fitness, mindset, and previous trek experience overall affect the journey. Following our Annapurna Circuit trek 14 days itinerary, you will cover around 85 kilometers. The terrain is uneven and steep and involves several uphill and downhill trekking.

Therefore, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the trek. Trekkers should consider three things - 6 hours of daily average walking, offbeat terrain, and high altitude. These are the main challenges of Annapurna Circuit trekking. If you can withstand them, you can complete the trek without any worry.

Note that you must also be fine with limited services and simple tea house accommodation and meals. The trek is not only physically but mentally demanding as well.

Altitude sickness

During the Annapurna Circuit trek, you have to be aware of altitude sickness. It happens if you are not acclimatized and keep gaining high altitude. Trekkers are advised to ascend slowly and maintain their pace. You do not have to rush or meet anyone's speed. Take your time to enjoy the trek.

The best time to do the Annapurna Circuit trek

Spring and autumn have the best weather and climate conditions throughout the Himalayas, including the Annapurna Himalayan range. Therefore, these two seasons are considered the best time of the year to enjoy Annapurna Circuit trekking.

However, this trek is possible throughout the year. Every season has pros and cons. One thing to note is that the journey is challenging whatever season you choose to do the Annapurna Circuit trek.

Likewise, the Himalayan weather is known for its unpredictable nature, so you have to be ready for sudden weather changes. The temperature can range from -10°C to 30°C and above at different elevations.

The climate remains mild in spring and autumn. Winter is the coldest time of the year. Likewise, monsoon/summer is the hottest and wettest time of the year. The humidity is also high in this season. Summer/monsoon and winter seasons see inconsistent weather compared to spring and autumn.

Accommodation

Tea houses are the accommodation during the Annapurna Circuit trek. They are simple mountain accommodations made to accommodate trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit. The rooms are twin-shared, and the washrooms are common.

You have to use squat toilets in some places along the trail. Single rooms cost a few extra bucks. Similarly, services like charging, WiFI, and hot water for showers also cost extra money. Therefore, trekkers are recommended to carry some Nepali cash for these expenses.

The locals are kind, and their hospitality is excellent. You will not feel uncomfortable at all. The rooms are small but cozy. A sleeping bag is highly recommended for this trek. Trekkers should also pack all skincare and toiletries for the journey.

Meals

During the Annapurna Circuit trekking, you will eat simple meals. Dal bhat, thukpa, and momo will be your primary meals. These are available everywhere.

Likewise, fried rice, stew, soups, porridge, rice with curries, pancakes, pies, Tibetan bread, chapati, paratha, and chowmein are also available. Some places also serve burgers, pasta, and pizza. Trekkers have access to boiled drinking water throughout the trek. It costs way less than buying plastic water bottles, which also affects the environment. You only have to carry a reusable water bottle.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you get breakfast in your hotel. You can have lunch and dinner on your own. Our Annapurna Circuit trek cost does not cover lunch and dinner expenses in the city.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must if you want to join us on the Annapurna Circuit trek. It has to cover medical bills and emergency helicopter evacuation. Without this coverage, your insurance will not be valid. You can combine other coverages like trip cancellation, loss/theft of personal belongings, etc.

Having travel insurance with evacuation coverage will allow you to immediately provide rescue if you get sick while trekking or if any unseen event arises. Without travel insurance, it is a hassle to organize rescue operations.
