About Gokyo Lakes Trek

Often known as Gokyo Valley Trek and Gokyo Lake Trek, it is shorter than regular Lukla to Everest Base Camp trekking. It is one of the most adventurous and exploratory trek with a series of high alpine lakes. Also, the elevation at Gokyo RI is the highest measuring 5364 m from the sea level. Gokyo Valley Trekking offers you an extraordinary and once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the beauty of the world’s tallest and prettiest mountains, and exquisite glaciers, including Ngozumpa glacier, the largest glacier in the Himalayas and second in the world. This journey takes you through the magnificent valleys of Dudh Koshi, rich in typical biodiversity, century-old Buddhist monasteries, and traditional Sherpa villages and finally brings you to the footsteps of the renowned Namche Bazaar, the epitome of Sherpa civilization and a gateway to classic Everest route. Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri trek are for those who like to walk in the Everest region without the physical stress of reaching the base camp of Everest or crossing high passes in the vicinity.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m)

Our airport representative will be in Kathmandu international airport with your name card or our agency's name card. When confirmation of your arrival is done, you will drive from airport to Kathmandu Hotel. After check in, you will be freshen up and go to visit agency office to collect flights tickets and other information. If you have missed to bring any trekking equipment then you can buy just next to hotel. You will have welcome dinner in the night and drop back to the hotel and overnight at Kathmandu hotel.

Today you will start your 12 days trek with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860 m) in the morning. If you are not taking guide from Kathmandu and like to take from Lukla airport, your guide will be there in airport with your name card. After 45 minutes, you will land in the runway. Then you will walk down to the Dudh Kosi River, where you will connect with the main path to Namche Bazaar. After moving all the way through the small area of Ghat (2550 m), you will soon arrive at our teahouse at Phakding.

You will start your trekking from Phakding and walk across the river to trek all the way through the area of Rhododendron. Then you will go crossways to the Dudh Kosi at Benkar and take pleasure from the scenes of snow-topped mountains Kusum Kanguru (6,369 m), Thamserku (6,623 m.) and so on. Along the way you will have your permits check at Jorsalle. Then trekking becomes fairly difficult and includes a perpendicular climb to Namche Bazaar. After crossing one of the suspension bridges above the river, you will ascend to Namche Bazaar. Overnight at hotel in Namche Bazaar.

Today you may rest or hike through the village of Khunde and Khumjung. Khumjung is the largest village of Khumbu region. After having lunch you will hike back to Namche Bazaar.

You will begin your daily hike with a steady climb along the valley. The Juniper forests dominates the woods. As you go up, you will see beautiful summer settlements and grazing land throughout. Superb views of Cho Oyu, its neighboring peaks Kangtega and Thamserku that will feast your eyes. By noon, you will arrive at Machhermo (4470 m). You will spend the rest of the day exploring Machhermo (4,470m), and spend the night there.

You will ascend on a hill and enjoy views of the Dudh Koshi valley and Kangtega, Thamserku and Cho-Oyu mountains. Beyond the ridge the valley widens as the trail passes through a Chorten and reaches Phangga. You will descend to the river bank before climbing up to the terminal moraine of the Ngozamba Glacier on a steep trail. You will pass through Longpongo, Raboche Tsho and Dudh Pokhari before reaching Gokyo. On the trail next to the first lake, you see what is believed to be the footprints of a Lama (Buddhist priest). You will explore Dudh Pokhari before calling it a night. Overnight in Gokyo.

Today you will wake up earlier to go to Gokyo ri (5360 m) for sunrise view. Gokyo ri is the excellent view point of Everest-Makalu Himalayan range. You will see excellent view of more than 8000m summits like Mount Everest (8848 m) , Makalu (8481 m), Lotshe (8414 m), Cho yu (8188 m), including 100s of small peaks and glaciers. After having excellent panoramic view of high Himalayas, you will trek down to explore Gokyo Lake area. Overnight at teahouse lodge.

On the 8th day of 12 days trek, you will descend on a trail along the Dudh Koshi River and pass the first Gokyo lake. On the way you also enjoy views of the Cholatse and Taboche peaks. Your trail descends before climbing a hill. After reaching the chorten at the edge, you will see great views of Thamserku, Cho Oyu, and Kangtega mountains. You will walk past Machhermo, Luza and Lhafarma villages before reaching Dole. Overnight in Dole.

Hiking up from Phortse Thanga to Mong-La is one of the most difficult part of trek as it is all the way steep uphill till Mong La otherwise it is about down hill and flat only till Monjo. Today you will exit from Sagarmatha National Park too as Monjo is gateway for Sagarmatha National Park. Stay overnight at Monjo.

After breakfast in Monjo you will start the trail through villages like Chumoa, Benkar, Phakding, and Chuthawa and get a chance to explore their tradition and culture. Though most of the route is an easy downhill slope, then you will climb uphill for an hour to reach Lukla. You will stay overnight in Lukla

The day starts with early morning joyful flight from Lukla to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. During the day you will have rest after long journey in the Khumbu Himalaya and evening dinner with Nepali Cultural Show.

And here you are done with your 13 days of journey in Nepal. And then as per your flight timings our staff will transfer you to Kathmandu airport for your international departure.
